GreenScreen™ Supporting Resources

Qualified GreenScreen™ Profilers

Description:
Qualified GreenScreen Profilers are organizations that have demonstrated expertise in toxicology and chemistry and that have the capacity to provide GreenScreen assessments on a consulting basis. The qualified profilers are kept up-to-date on all method revisions and CPA audits their application of the method to ensure that it is being applied as intended. Currently certified GreenScreen Profilers include ToxServices, Inc. and NSF International in the US. Additional US profilers are currently in the process of qualifying and several European consulting firms have expressed initial interest.

Software/Automation

Currently GreenScreen assessments are performed manually and elements of the method, such as the searching of authoritative and screening hazard lists can be monotonous and time intensive. CPA has developed the GreenScreen™ List Translator (GS List Translator) that maps authoritative and screening hazard lists to hazard classifications for relevant endpoints. By automating the search for chemicals on those lists and linking them directly to hazard classifications, automation can greatly reduce the time needed to search the relevant GreenScreen supporting lists.

Automation of the GS List Translator™ represents only a portion of the full GreenScreen method. CPA is partnering with Healthy Building Network in the development of their Pharos database, and with The Wercs in the development of their GreenWERCS database by working with these organizations to integrate the GS List Translator into their software tools. Future partnerships include The Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry in the development of their Public Library of Materials (PLuM) database.

How it Works: – Automation of the GS List Translator:

  1. Allows you to enter a chemical name or CAS number and to search against all of the list(s) in the GS List Translator and generate a report either in the form of a list (Pharos) or the GreenScreen Hazard Table (GreenWERCS).
  2. Generates a report of the hazard classification level (or range) assigned for each hazard endpoint based on the GS List Translator
  3. Quickly identifies all of the GreenScreen Specified Lists on which the chemical is found
  4. Generates the GS List Translator Score for each chemical using the GreenScreen Benchmarking system
  5. In some cases, a chemical may be found on multiple lists and the hazard classifications based on those lists may conflict. In such cases, the GS List Translator "Trumping Rules" apply. According to the trumping rules, in the case of conflicting results, Authoritative lists trump Screening lists; and when lists of equal authoritative or screening value conflict, then the more conservative value is used.

Details:

1. Pharos database

Description:
The Pharos Chemical & Material Library provides easy online access to chemical hazard information for over 20,000 CASRN identified substances cross referenced against the authoritative hazard lists identified by the GreenScreen List Translator. Users can look up chemicals by CASRN or name to determine health and ecotoxicity endpoints and hazard level and GreenScreen Benchmark as per the List Translator. The Chemical and Material Library was developed by the Healthy Building Network (HBN) as part of a suite of tools to evaluate the health and environmental impact of building materials. The GreenScreen benchmark system informs the Pharos scoring system for building products.

2. GreenWERCS database

Description:
As part of The Wercs software platform, Clean Production Action's GreenScreen List Translator has been incorporated into the GreenWercs module. In order to accomplish this, The Wercs has mapped all GreenScreen specified lists and the associated hazard classifications so that any chemical CAS# can be evaluated against 850 lists from 36 primary authoritative and screening sources in seconds. This automation is saving companies hours of manual research and thousands of dollars. The results will allow companies to quickly identify chemicals of concern and begin to look for safer alternatives.

GreenScreen™ Validation Program

While the GreenScreen method is open and transparent and freely available, all GreenScreen assessments are considered "Draft" unless they have gone through the GreenScreen Validation process. Results from draft GreenScreen assessments may NOT be used to make public promotional claims on products. The downloadable GreenScreen reporting template includes the header "DRAFT – has not been through Validation".

The GreenScreen Validation Program is currently being piloted for assessments that have been performed by licensed Profilers and for which data are fully transparent. Successful validation will allow the user to claim resulting GreenScreen Benchmark scores and to use the GreenScreen trademark on their products.
