About the Safer Products Project

Clean Production Action launched the Safer Products Project to generate public support for safe chemicals. Our household dust study demonstrates that hazardous chemicals, used widely in common household products, are contaminating household dust and presenting yet another exposure to dangerous chemicals. Yet this is a totally avoidable situation. Companies can indeed replace these chemicals of high concern with safer alternatives. But voluntary action by innovative companies is not enough to remove hazardous chemicals from the market. Our government has a responsibility to protect public health by demanding that the chemical industry start manufacturing chemicals that are safe for the environment and human health.

Hazardous chemicals are regularly used as additives in consumer goods. Some of these chemicals are known to be hazardous—yet our current system of regulation allows them to continue to be brought into our homes in products.  As we learn more about the risks of using toxic chemicals that persist and build up in the environment, companies are finding ways to replace high concern chemicals with safer alternatives.
