Clean Products

For PRODUCTS, the strategy focuses on reducing impacts along the entire life cycle of the product…from raw material extraction to the ultimate disposal of the product.

—UNEP Cleaner Production Program

Clean Production requires system thinking. The product life cycle (sometimes called the product chain) encompasses the entire system of materials and energy used in production systems. Producers must take responsibility for their product life cycles and the public, workers, and communities must have access to information about these product chains. Informed workers and consumers are a prerequisite for clean production systems. Obtaining this information is a challenge, even though corporations operate within this information technology age. The public must now demand life cycle assessments and product labeling. Consumers and governments must put their spending power into green procurement and taxpayers must demand ecological tax reform so that public money goes to safer materials.
