Environmentally Preferable Products
CPA focuses on the eco-design of products in the healthcare and electronics sectors which command huge influence over global supply chains of chemicals, materials and products. We also promote Extended Producer Responsibility as an important strategy to achieve a closed loop materials economy in which products and materials are either composted or safely recycled.
Electronics
Due to shorter life spans of electronic products, and the absence of a domestic recycling infrastructure in many countries to process discarded equipment, electronic waste is the fastest growing, most toxic waste stream in the world. CPA works to advance the production and use of electronic products that can be safely used, re-used and recycled. Safer Products Project
Deca-BDE and other hazardous chemicals are now found widely in household dust. In 2004 we coordinated a dust sampling project with US-based NGOs to see how widespread hazardous chemicals are in the home. Click here for more information.
Extended Producer Responsibility
We promote Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), popularly known as ‘take-back’, as an important strategy to achieve a closed loop materials economy. EPR is a policy that focuses on the manufacturers’ responsibility for the life cycle impact of their products. Good EPR policies promote eco-design and safe take-back and recycling practices.
Health Care
Through our work with Health Care Without Harm, we work with the health care sector to design and deliver green procurement strategies for health care institutions. View and download the Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Guidance Document for Health Care
